Cause-effect Essay

The Effects of Working with New Staff

Many college students have a part time job after school. Having a part-time job after school is beneficial to college students. For instance, they can earn more money. Students can also make many friends in the workplace. However, working with colleagues is not an easy thing. Sometimes, we may receive negative collaborate experiences when working with co-workers in workplaces, especially to the new members.

To begin with, working with new co-workers may make us much busier. Take me as an example. My parents run a restaurant near CCU, and I always go there to help them after school since I was an elementary school student. Recently they hired 2 students. Every time when the new members come, I should teach them how to work with us. We usually teach them during our business hours because we want the students learn by doing. However, if too many customers come to our restaurant in a short time, I will be nervous because I should serve customers quickly while teaching our new members at the same time. I always have a hard time when facing this kind of situation because I cannot concentrate on working. Once I cannot concentrate, I will serve the customers inefficiently.

Another problem is that teaching new staff may be frustrating sometimes. For instance, our new members need to learn how to cook spaghetti. We have four kinds of spaghetti sauce in the refrigerator. Our new staff need to know how much sauce they should add to a plate of spaghetti. The amount they should add depends on what kind of sauce the customer orders. To a beginner, it is really hard to memorize those things in a short time, especially when they need to work while learning new things. Some new members get confused repeatedly, so I should remind them again and again. This sometimes makes me frustrated because all I taught were simple things. Some of our new members even forgot what I taught the previous day when they came to work, and I had to teach them again. Sometimes when the workload is too heavy for the new staff, they would just stand there because they were too nervous. Once they got nervous, they forgot everything I taught. It really made me feel disheartened.

Last but not the least, teaching new staff make me exhausted. To illustrate, after my parents hired some new staff, I should teach them while working with them. If the workload is not heavy, I can teach the new members effortlessly. However, if the workload is too heavy, I will be extremely busy since I should take care of the crew while serving the customers quickly. Sometimes I even need to pick up the slack for the new members because they cannot serve the customers or cook cuisine efficiently. This makes me feel exhausted since I must pay much more attention to the customers and new members simultaneously. If I don’t go to help our new crew in the first place, they may not know what to do, and our customers might become unhappy because they have been waiting for a long time.

To conclude, working with new people can be joyful, but it can also be tiring and frustrating if your coworkers are not familiar with the job. We all know that learning new things is difficult at first, not to mention knowing how to use them immediately. Although our new members brought many problems to me, I am still willing to help them to solve the problems they face. Next time you run into a similar situation, try to show more empathy to your colleagues because they may feel anxious just like the two students in my parents’ restaurant.
